I went to Tahiti in December 1995 and came back with horrible stomach cramps and debilitating diarrhea. I was diagnosed with Shigella, given aggressive antibiotics and told that I would be better in 7-10 days. 3 weeks later and only slightly better, I returned to the doctor who tested me again. After assuring me that I no longer had the virus, I was referred to a bevy of doctors to try and determine what was wrong.

One year and countless tests, probes and prescriptions later, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s, something my doctor had assured me she was 99.9% sure I did not have when I met her months earlier. When I got the call, I cried tears of relief before the reality set in. I am considered “lucky”, I’ve had relatively few hospitalizations, no surgeries and a fairly stable protocol for a few years, and I while I’m really grateful for all that, I still feel like $%#@ more days than I feel healthy.

Having a supportive husband, family and groups like CCFA and GWG have made a profound difference in my life
